Fix a Vacuum That's Losing Suction

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 3, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

90% of suction loss is blockages or full containers — not broken motors. Work through this checklist from easiest to hardest before buying anything.

Free Fixes (Check These First)

  1. Empty the canister/bag — most vacuums lose 50%+ suction when 70% full. Empty it even if it looks half-empty.
  2. Check the hose for clogs — detach it, look through it at a light. Poke out blockages with a broomstick.
  3. Clear the brush roll — hair wraps around it and creates drag. Cut it away with scissors.
  4. Inspect all filters — rinse washable filters under water, let dry 24hrs. Replace non-washable filters if grey/clogged.
  5. Check for air leaks — run vacuum and feel along hose/connections for escaping air. Tape cracks temporarily with duct tape.

If Still Weak After Above

Replace the filters. HEPA filters clog invisibly over time — most need replacing every 6-12 months depending on use. Check your model number and buy OEM or compatible filters.

Belt may be stretched. If the brush roll spins slowly or not at all, the belt is worn. Belts are $5-10 and take 10 minutes to replace (YouTube your model).

When to Replace the Vacuum

If the motor smells burnt, makes grinding noises, or suction is still weak after all fixes above, motor replacement costs more than a new vacuum. Uprights last 5-8 years, bagless canisters 8-12 years with maintenance.

Pro tip: Clean filters monthly and empty the canister at 50% full (not when the 'full' line hits). This single habit doubles vacuum lifespan and keeps suction strong.
