Fix a Dishwasher That Won't Drain

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 3, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

The #1 cause is a clogged filter or drain hose. Most people never clean the filter — it's designed to catch food debris but gets forgotten. 90% of drain issues are solved with a 10-minute cleaning.

Free Fixes (Try These First)

  1. Clean the filter: Pull out the bottom rack. The filter is at the base — twist counterclockwise and lift out. Rinse under hot water, scrub with a brush. Reinstall.
  2. Check the drain hose: Look under the sink where the dishwasher drain connects. If it loops too low or kinks, water can't flow. The hose should rise to counter height before dropping to the drain (creates an air gap).
  3. Run the garbage disposal: If your dishwasher drains into the disposal, a clog there blocks drainage. Run disposal for 30 seconds with cold water.
  4. Check for standing water in the sump: Remove filter, scoop out water with a cup, feel around the sump hole for bone fragments, twist ties, glass shards.

$10-30 Fix

  1. Clean the drain pump: Access the pump (beneath the filter housing). Remove the cover (usually 3-4 screws). Pull out debris. Spin the impeller with your finger — should rotate freely.

$40-120 Fix

  1. Replace the drain pump: If impeller is jammed or motor hums but doesn't spin, the pump is dead. Replacement pumps are model-specific — search '[your dishwasher model] drain pump'. 30-minute DIY job with screwdrivers.

When to Call a Pro

If none of the above work, the issue is likely the drain solenoid, control board, or a mainline clog. A plumber costs $150-250 for diagnosis and simple fixes.

Pro tip: Run hot water in your sink for 30 seconds BEFORE starting the dishwasher. Cold water in the lines makes detergent less effective and increases drain clogs from solidified grease.
