Fix a Phone Battery That Drains Too Fast

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 7, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

The #1 culprit is background apps and screen brightness. Most battery drain issues can be fixed in 5 minutes without buying anything.

Free Fixes (Do These First)

  1. Check Battery Health: iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Android: Settings → Battery → Battery Usage. If capacity is below 80%, the battery itself is worn out.
  2. Kill Background Apps: Close unused apps. iPhone: swipe up and swipe away. Android: Recent Apps button, swipe away.
  3. Reduce Screen Brightness: Drop to 30-50%. Auto-brightness often keeps it too high.
  4. Turn Off Location Services: Settings → Privacy/Location → set apps to "While Using" instead of "Always". Google Maps, Facebook, and Instagram are the worst offenders.
  5. Disable Background App Refresh: iPhone: Settings → General → Background App Refresh → Off. Android: Settings → Apps → select app → Battery → Restrict background activity.
  6. Turn Off Push Email: Set email to fetch every 15-30 minutes instead of push. Settings → Mail → Accounts → Fetch New Data.
  7. Enable Low Power Mode: iPhone: Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode. Android: Settings → Battery → Battery Saver. Use this when below 20%.

If Free Fixes Don't Work

If your phone is 2+ years old AND battery health is below 80%, you need a battery replacement. Apple charges $89-99 for iPhone battery replacement. Android varies by model ($50-100 at uBreakiFix or Best Buy).

When to replace the whole phone: If the phone is 4+ years old, a new battery will cost $70-100 but you'll still have an outdated processor and camera. At that point, consider upgrading instead.

Portable Power Solutions

If you can't replace the battery immediately, a portable charger extends your day.

Pro tip: Charging from 20% to 80% extends battery lifespan more than charging to 100% every time. iPhones have "Optimized Battery Charging" in Settings → Battery that does this automatically.
