Fix a Buzzing Light Switch

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 7, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

A buzzing switch means loose wiring or a worn-out switch mechanism. This is a fire hazard if ignored — fix it immediately.

Safe DIY Fix (15 minutes, $5-15)

  1. Turn off power at breaker panel — flip the breaker for that room. Test with a non-contact voltage tester to confirm power is off.
  2. Remove switch plate — unscrew and pull switch out gently by the mounting screws.
  3. Check wire connections — Look for loose screws on the sides. Tighten each terminal screw firmly (not over-tight). If wires are push-in connectors on back, pull them out and reconnect to side screws instead — back-stab connections fail over time.
  4. Replace the switch if tightening doesn't help — Switches wear out. Take a photo of wire connections before disconnecting. Match wire colors: black to brass screws, white to silver, green/bare to green ground screw.
  5. Restore power and test — If buzzing persists after replacement, call an electrician — could be a dimmer incompatibility or circuit overload.

When to Call a Pro

If the switch is hot to touch, sparking, or you see blackened wires, do not attempt repair — turn off breaker and call an electrician. Also call if you have aluminum wiring (silver-colored, not copper).

Pro tip: Buzzing dimmers are often caused by non-dimmable LED bulbs. Standard toggles don't buzz with LEDs — only dimmers do. If you replaced incandescent bulbs with LEDs recently, swap the dimmer for a regular switch or use dimmable-rated LEDs.
