Fix iPhone Screen Flickering

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 3, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

Screen flickering is usually software, not hardware. Most cases resolve without repair. Work through free fixes first — hardware replacement is the last resort.

Immediate Free Fixes (Try in Order)

  1. Force restart: iPhone 8 or newer: press volume up, press volume down, hold power until Apple logo appears. This clears 80% of display glitches.
  2. Disable Auto-Brightness: Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → turn off Auto-Brightness. Sensor conflicts cause flicker.
  3. Turn off True Tone: Settings → Display & Brightness → True Tone off. Color calibration bugs trigger this.
  4. Reduce Motion: Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Reduce Motion on. Animation processing can stress GPU.
  5. Update iOS: Settings → General → Software Update. Display driver bugs fixed in patches.

If Still Flickering

  1. Test in Safe Mode (iPhone 15+): Force restart while holding volume down after Apple logo. If flicker stops, a third-party app is the culprit.
  2. Remove case/screen protector: Pressure on digitizer edges causes phantom touch flicker.
  3. Check for water damage: Moisture in connector causes intermittent signal loss. Let dry 48hrs in silica gel.

Hardware Fixes

If none of the above work AND flicker is constant:

Pro tip: Record a screen recording (swipe down Control Center → Screen Recording). If flicker DOES NOT appear in the video, it's a display hardware issue. If it DOES appear in the video, it's GPU/software and likely fixable without hardware replacement.
