Unclog a Bathtub Drain Without Chemicals

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 2, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

The real problem: 99% of bathtub clogs are hair + soap scum stuck in the trap, not deep in the pipes. Chemical drain cleaners corrode metal, damage rubber seals, and fail on hair clogs. Mechanical removal beats chemicals every time.

Fastest Fix (5 minutes)

  1. Remove the drain cover — most unscrew counterclockwise or pop out with a flathead screwdriver
  2. Use a drain snake or bent wire hanger — push down 12-18 inches, twist to catch hair, pull straight up
  3. You'll likely pull out a disgusting wad of hair and gunk — this solves 90% of clogs instantly
  4. Run hot water for 2 minutes to flush remaining debris

If That Doesn't Work (15 minutes)

  1. Fill tub with 2-3 inches of hot water
  2. Place plunger flat over drain — petroleum jelly on rim creates better seal
  3. Plunge with quick, forceful strokes 15-20 times — the water pressure dislodges clogs the snake missed
  4. If still clogged, try baking soda + vinegar method below

Natural Dissolving Method (2 hours wait time)

  1. Pour 1 cup baking soda down drain
  2. Follow with 1 cup white vinegar — it will fizz aggressively
  3. Immediately plug drain with wet rag to keep reaction in pipes
  4. Wait 30 minutes, then flush with boiling water
  5. Repeat if needed — this breaks down soap scum but won't clear solid hair clogs

Prevention

Install a hair catcher over the drain — catches hair before it goes down. Clean it weekly. This eliminates 95% of future clogs.

Pro tip: If the plunger isn't working, block the overflow plate (the hole near the top of the tub) with a wet rag while plunging — otherwise you're just pushing air in circles instead of creating pressure on the clog.
