Speed Up a Slow Mac Laptop

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 7, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

Most Macs slow down from RAM pressure and background processes eating CPU, not age. Fix path: free diagnostics → software cleanup → hardware upgrade.

Free Diagnostics First

  1. Open Activity Monitor (Spotlight search or Applications > Utilities)
  2. Click 'Memory' tab — if 'Memory Pressure' graph is yellow/red, you need more RAM or to close apps
  3. Click 'CPU' tab — sort by '% CPU' to find hogs. Common culprits: Chrome with 50+ tabs, Spotlight indexing after updates, Photos library sync, Google Drive/Dropbox

Immediate Free Fixes

  1. Restart — clears RAM leaks from apps running for days
  2. Reduce Login Items: System Settings > General > Login Items — remove apps you don't need at startup (Spotify, Slack, Adobe Creative Cloud all auto-launch and eat RAM)
  3. Disable visual effects: System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Reduce motion (helps older Macs)
  4. Clear browser cache/extensions: Chrome extensions alone can use 2GB+ RAM. Safari > Settings > Extensions — disable what you don't use daily
  5. Free up disk space: Macs with less than 15% free storage slow dramatically. Delete old iOS backups (Finder > your Mac name > Manage Backups), clear Downloads folder, empty Trash
  6. Check Apple's official guidance: Visit Apple Support for Mac running slowly for manufacturer-verified troubleshooting steps

Software Cleanup Tools

  1. Check for macOS updates: System Settings > General > Software Update — performance fixes often included
  2. Run cleanup software: CleanMyMac offers free malware scans and junk file removal with 60M+ downloads, or try MacBooster (up to 62% off) to clean junk files, remove malware, and optimize hard disk performance
  3. Reset SMC and NVRAM (Intel Macs only — Apple Silicon doesn't need this)

Hardware Upgrades (Intel Macs Only)

Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3/M4) have soldered RAM and storage — cannot be upgraded. If you have an Intel Mac (2020 or earlier):

  1. Add RAM: 8GB is bare minimum for modern macOS, 16GB is comfortable. Cost: $50-150 depending on model
  2. Upgrade to SSD: If you have a spinning hard drive (HDD), upgrading to SSD is transformative. Cost: $100-300 + installation. Best Buy offers Mac upgrade services

When to Consider Replacement

If your Mac is pre-2017 with 4GB RAM and you cannot upgrade it, a new MacBook Air (starting around $999-1099) will feel 10x faster than trying to optimize the old one. Apple Silicon chips (M1 and newer) outperform 2019 Intel i7 MacBooks while using less power.

Pro tip: Enable 'Optimize Storage' in System Settings > General > Storage. macOS auto-removes watched TV shows and old email attachments to keep 15%+ free space, which prevents slowdowns. Also check for 'Other' storage bloat — often cached app data.

What you need

Some links below earn pyflo a commission at no extra cost to you. How this works.

Laptop Stand

Ergonomic stand raises screen to eye level. Prevents neck strain.

Laptop Sleeve

Protective sleeve for transport. Get one with padding for drops.

Crucial RAM Memory Module

Essential if you have an Intel Mac with upgradeable RAM (2012-2020 models). 16GB kit for most MacBook Pros. Verify compatibility on Crucial's site before buying.

$50-150
External SSD Drive

If internal storage is full and you can't upgrade (Apple Silicon Macs), offload large files to external SSD. Samsung T7 or SanDisk Extreme recommended.

$80-150
CleanMyMac X Software

Optional but effective — removes gigabytes of system junk, optimizes performance, uninstalls stubborn apps. Free trial, $40 annual license.

$40
Samsung EVO SSD

For Intel Macs with HDD. Upgrading from spinning disk to SSD is the single biggest speed boost possible. 500GB is sufficient for most users.

$60-120
USB-C Hub

Expand ports — HDMI, USB-A, SD card reader. Essential for modern laptops.

Wireless Mouse

External mouse is essential for productivity. Bluetooth for portability.
