Remove Red Wine Stains from Carpet

The key is speed and absorption, not scrubbing. Scrubbing pushes wine deeper into fibers. Instead, blot and use chemistry to lift the stain.

Immediate Action (First 5 Minutes)

  1. Blot, don't rub: Use a clean white cloth or paper towels. Press firmly to absorb as much wine as possible. Work from the outside edge toward the center to prevent spreading.
  2. Salt method: Pour table salt generously over the wet stain. Salt absorbs wine and prevents it from setting. Leave for 10-15 minutes, then vacuum.

Deep Cleaning (After Blotting)

  1. Club soda or white wine: Pour directly onto stain, let fizz for 1 minute, then blot. The carbonation helps lift the stain. White wine neutralizes red wine tannins.
  2. Dish soap + hydrogen peroxide: Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap with 2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide. Apply to stain, let sit 5 minutes, blot with damp cloth. Test in a hidden area first — peroxide can bleach some carpets.
  3. Enzyme cleaner: For set-in stains (older than 1 hour), use an enzyme-based pet stain remover. Enzymes break down organic compounds in wine. Apply per bottle instructions, usually 10-15 minutes.

For Stubborn or Old Stains

Rent a carpet cleaner with hot water extraction, or call a professional. Wine that has oxidized for 24+ hours is much harder to remove without professional equipment.

Pro tip: Keep a small bottle of white wine or club soda under your sink specifically for emergency wine spills. The faster you act, the less you'll need specialized cleaners.
