Fix a Squeaky Hardwood Floor

⏱ 1 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 7, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

Squeaks happen when boards rub against each other or loose nails. The fix depends on whether you have access to the floor from below (basement/crawlspace) or only from above.

Free Fixes First

  1. Sprinkle talcum powder or graphite powder into seams between boards — works as a lubricant to reduce friction. Sweep excess.
  2. If you can access from below, have someone walk on the squeak while you watch from underneath to locate the exact spot.

From Above (No Basement Access)

  1. Squeak-relief kit: Drive special breakaway screws through carpet or hardwood into the subfloor. Screw head snaps off flush.
  2. For exposed hardwood, pre-drill pilot holes at an angle and drive finish nails into joists (usually 16" apart). Countersink with nail set, fill with wood putty matching your floor stain.

From Below (Best Method)

  1. Locate the squeak from underneath while someone walks above.
  2. Drive 1.5" wood screws up through subfloor into hardwood — just until snug, don't overdrive or you'll lift the floor.
  3. Add wood shims coated with construction adhesive between joist and subfloor if there's a gap.

Pro tip: Squeaks near heating vents are often seasonal — wood expands/contracts with humidity. A humidifier in winter can prevent new squeaks from forming. If multiple areas squeak, the subfloor may be deteriorating — consider a pro inspection before refinishing.
