Fix a Loose Door Knob That Keeps Turning

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 3, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

The problem is almost always loose set screws or a stripped spindle. Most fixes take under 5 minutes with a screwdriver.

Diagnosis First

Turn the knob — if it spins without engaging the latch, the set screw is loose or the square spindle inside is worn. If the entire knob wobbles but still works, the mounting screws are loose.

Quick Fix (Free)

  1. Find the set screw: Small screw on the knob's neck or a slot under the knob base. On modern knobs, there's often a small slot or button you press to release the knob.
  2. Tighten with hex key: Most use 3/32" or 1/8" Allen wrench. Turn clockwise until snug — do not overtighten or you'll strip it.
  3. Test: Knob should now engage the latch mechanism.

If Set Screw Keeps Loosening

  1. Apply 1 drop of threadlocker (blue Loctite) to the set screw threads.
  2. Reinstall and let cure 10 minutes.

If Spindle is Stripped

The square metal spindle inside has worn down. You need to replace the entire knob set — the spindle is not sold separately. Match your door thickness (usually 1-3/8" or 1-3/4") and backset (distance from door edge to center of hole, usually 2-3/8" or 2-3/4").

If Handle Wobbles Side-to-Side

  1. Remove the knob (release button or set screw).
  2. Tighten the two long screws that go through the door from one side to the other.
  3. Reinstall knob.

Pro tip: If your door knob is 10+ years old and you're replacing it anyway, upgrade to a keyed entry knob for $25-40 instead of a basic passage knob for $15. Same install effort, adds security.

What you need

Door Knob Set

If spindle is stripped, you need a replacement. Measure door thickness and backset first. Kwikset or Schlage are reliable.

$15-25
Loctite Blue Threadlocker

Stops set screws from loosening again. Use blue (removable), not red (permanent).

$6-8
Screwdriver Set

For tightening mounting screws. Get Phillips and flathead combo.

$12-18
Hex Key Set

Essential — door knobs use 3/32" or 1/8" hex screws. Get a set so you have the right size.

$8-12
Hole Saw Drill Bit

Only needed if installing a new knob and holes don't line up. Get a 2-1/8" hole saw for doorknob holes.

$15-25
