Fix a Hole in a Window Screen

⏱ 2 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 7, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

Most screen holes under 3 inches can be patched in 10 minutes without removing the screen. The repair method depends on hole size — small holes get patched, large tears need panel replacement.

For Small Holes (Under 1 inch)

  1. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol
  2. Apply clear nail polish or super glue in thin layers, let dry between coats (builds a seal over the mesh)
  3. Alternative: use a needle and thread to "weave" the hole closed using the existing screen as a guide

For Medium Holes (1-3 inches)

  1. Cut a patch from spare screen material or buy a patch kit
  2. Make the patch 1 inch larger than the hole on all sides
  3. Center it over the hole and secure with screen repair adhesive or by bending the patch edges through the existing screen mesh
  4. Press firmly and let cure 24 hours

For Large Tears (3+ inches)

  1. Remove the spline (rubber cord) around the frame edge with a flathead screwdriver
  2. Pull out old screen, cut new screen 2 inches oversized
  3. Lay new screen over frame, press spline back into the channel with a spline roller tool (starts at one corner, work around)
  4. Trim excess screen with a utility knife

Common mistake: Stretching the screen too tight during replacement causes warping. It should be taut but not drum-tight.

Pro tip: Keep a 12x12 inch piece of spare screen material in your toolbox — most window screens are either fiberglass or aluminum mesh, both available at hardware stores for under $10 per roll. One roll repairs 10+ screens.
