Fix a Stiff Door Lock That's Hard to Turn

⏱ 1 min read 🛠 Step-by-step 🆓 Free to read 📅 Updated May 4, 2026 · Pyflo Editorial

The #1 cause is dried-out lubricant or debris in the keyway. Most locks can be fixed in 5 minutes with the right lube — but WD-40 is NOT it (it gums up over time).

Quick Fix (Free)

  1. Wiggle the key in and out while turning — this can break up surface dirt
  2. Spray canned air into the keyway to blow out dust

Proper Fix ($5-12, 5 minutes)

  1. Spray graphite powder or dry Teflon lube into the keyway
  2. Insert key and work it in/out 10-15 times, turning each direction
  3. Wipe excess from key and lock face

If Still Stiff

  1. Check alignment: Does the door sag? If the deadbolt barely clears the strike plate, the door hinges may need tightening or shimming
  2. Key worn? Get a fresh copy cut from the original, not a copy-of-a-copy
  3. Lock old? If 15+ years old and the cylinder feels gritty even after lube, replace the lock cylinder ($20-40)

Pro tip: Graphite is the gold standard for locks — it's dry so it won't attract dust like oil-based lubes. Apply once a year as preventive maintenance. Never use WD-40 or 3-in-1 oil in locks — they attract grime and make the problem worse over time.
